Feeling my father’s joy in this week’s election results
Daddy is top of mind this week.
I’m thinking of one morning a decade ago, the morning we all knew DJT would be in the White House the first time. Daddy stirred sugar into his coffee at my kitchen table, shaking his head.
“That man is gonna turn this country back at least 50 years,” he sighed. And he was right.
As a Black man who was born in 1930 and lived in the South during Jim Crow, Brown v. Board, the Civil Rights Era, wars, and so much more, he was more than qualified to say what he said. Lived experience over 82 years by then, in small and big ways, gave him that.

I was blessed to have a front row seat to his stories over the years, none short of amazing. Daddy’s stories would make listeners chuckle one minute, wipe tears away the next.
So, while I’m thinking of all my ancestors and elders especially this week, Daddy is front and center.
And I have a feeling he’s raising a glass of something sweet, smiling and proud. 💙
